How to Protect a Newly-birthed Democracy?

by Olfa Soukri Cherif , Vice-Chair of the PN, MP Tunisia | on 03.07.15 | in Good Governance

A lot has been said and written about the Tunisian Revolution, and you must know a lot at this point. I hope today that I can not only help you understand it better, but more importantly, talk about the future and what we need to protect this democracy which is in its early days of consolidation.

There are no words strong enough to describe the barbarian attacks of both the Bardo tragedy two months ago and of the Sousse attack last week. I sincerely and deeply wish to present my condolences to all the victims and their loved ones.

It is an existential tragedy to see the innocent deceased coming over only to discover our civilization and culture. They come from all over the world without speaking our language to discover the beauty of life and love which Tunisians represent.

These two attacks and the others less known are hurting us, but we have to act in solidarity and courage for all Tunisians and citizens around the world. This event strengthens the love to my country to support humanity.

As Members of Parliament (MPs), we have to stand side-by-side with the government fighting against all forms of terrorism. Terrorism is a global challenge where we have together to stand up and support humanity.

The attacks are everywhere, whether it is in Denmark, France, and now Kuwait and Tunisia. A very tiny and small minority is now against the wish of the Tunisian people; they seek to destroy what has been built.

The Tunisian people have suffered many years, and Tunisians have sacrificed their lives to give birth to the Tunisian Revolution and start the democratic process. Now it is our time, as a Tunisian Member of Parliament, to take our responsibilities and protect the revolution, grow the democracy, and work to offer a better future for our population.

We have worked hard and delivered a truly democratic constitution, recognized as one of the best in the world; but this is not enough. We need to work hard and efficiently to implement the new reforms we seek to deliver.

The priorities for us are:

1) combating terrorism and establish security;

2) protecting and consolidate democracy;

3) engaging in structural reform to reshape the country’s economy and put it back on track;

4) and promoting investment to create new valuable jobs.

Tunisia is at risk, but we can absolutely become a new democracy with excellent results. Tunisia can become proof that we can reconcile Islam with democracy and share prosperity for the region. Tunisia must continue to be a model for the region and the world.

Spread the word to the world: invest in democracy and visit Tunisia!
